Kew Gardens is a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its botanical research and education since 1759. The Palm House at Kew Gardens is one of the oldest surviving glasshouses in the world and home to an amazing indoor rainforest, with tropical plants from some of the most threatened environments in the world.
RHI Water Rainwater Filter at Kew Gardens
Water conservation is a major focus of the new glasshouse, as part of a wider sustainable irrigation strategy for Kew launched in spring 2024. The rainwater harvesting system features a 40,000-litre rainwater capture tank that will sit above the ground to store rainwater. Over 4,000m2 of roof area collects rainwater through a HYDRAPRO® FT-5 rainwater filter which sieve’s and removes debris and any coarse contaminants. The HYDRAPRO® FT-5 rainwater filter has been fitted with the optional wash-bar which automatically cleans the filter periodically, reducing the need for maintenance while maintaining the high flow rate and efficiency of the filter. The low invert drop across the filter permitted installation in a limited height between the gutter and above ground tank, without compromising filter performance.
These systems ensure that water used in the irrigation systems is collected and filtered from natural sustainable resources, reducing the reliance on potable water and lowering the environmental impact.
